Education in Islam
Education in Islam
Hafiz Aziz
The importance of education has been emphasized repeatedly in the Quran and Hadith. The first verse of Quran revealed to the Prophet PBUH indicates the importance of education; the verse started with the word “Iqra”, it is a command that means‘read’ in Arabic, and implies the concepts of ‘learning’. Islam in theory as well as in practice, has always promoted knowledge. Seeking education is obligatory on every Muslim regardless of gender. Knowledge is considered to be the path towards greater closeness to the Creator of all that exists.
It is stated in first verse revealed, "Read! In the Name of your Lord who has created (all that exists). He has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous. Who has taught (the writing) by the pen. He has taught man that which he knew not " [96:1-5]
It is stated in the holy Quran, "Allah grants wisdom to whom He pleases and to whom wisdom is granted indeed he receives an overflowing benefit." [2:269]
It is stated in the holy Quran, “Those truly fear God, among His Servants, who have knowledge: for God is Exalted in Might, Oft-Forgiving.” [35:28]
Prophet PBUH said, “Acquire knowledge, for he who acquires it in the way of Allah performs an act of piety; he who speaks of it, praises the Lord; he who seeks it, adores Allah; he who dispenses instruction in it, bestows alms; and he who imparts it to others, performs an act of devotion to Allah”. [Bukhari]
Prophet PBUH said, “The person who pursue the path of knowledge, Allah will direct him to the path of Paradise; and verily the superiority of a learned man over an ignorant worshipper is like that of the full moon over the stars. [Muslim]
Prophet PBUH said, “After the death of a person all his deeds ends except three: 1) continuous charity; 2) Knowledge which benefits others; 3) A virtuous child who prays for him”. [Muslim]
Prophet PBUH said, “A single scholar of religion is more formidable against Shaytan than a thousand devout persons”.
Prophet PBUH said, “Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave”.
Please sit down for a moment
Prophet PBUH said, “Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave”.
Education is normally divided into two categories: knowledge concerning religion and knowledge of science and the creation of all that exists. Islam emphasizes the importanceof both, and as Muslims it is our responsibility to strive to gain both religious as well as secular knowledge. We should acquire sufficient religious knowledge to enable ourselves to understand the essence and teachings of the Quran and the purpose for which it has been sent down and what our responsibilities as Muslims are. At the same time, acquire education so we could benefit the society and humanity. Embryology, astronomy, the solar system, earthquakes, existence of the mountains, water, animals…., and most those topics that are part of our current scientific studies have been referenced in the Quran. A scientific approach has been encouraged in the Quran with the objective of ascertaining its truthfulness. If we look back centuries ago, all great scholars were Muslims. Understanding science and the nature of all that exists give us a better perspective of the Almighty powers. Knowledge should be pursued at any age and practiced with modesty and humility. A person without knowledge is like someone walking along a track in complete darkness. May AllahSWTgive us strength to behave and act just as He likes us to do and be pleased with us. (O Lord, increase us in knowledge – “Rabbi zidnee ilma”). Ameen.
