Every Good Deed of a Muslim is Sadaqah/Charity
Hafiz Aziz
Charity/Sadaqah, as it is traditionally understood, consists of money or objects given to help the poor. However, in Islam every action of a Muslim done with good intention also has a virtue and there is reward of Sadaqah for it, provided it does not involve disobedience of AllahSWTand is done only for His sake. Since Sadaqah is not just limited to giving of money, therefore, every Muslim whether poor or wealthy can give Sadaqah at all times. The types of Sadaqah and the means of doing good are many, some of them may exceed the reward of donating money, although this differs according to the circumstances of the person concerned. Doing Ziker (remembrance of Allah); acquiring knowledge/education to help the society; being kind to ones parents/family; acts of saving people from harm; responding to someone with a smile; helping needy people; or many other such acts are all greatly liked by AllahSWT and we will be rewarded greatly.
It is mentioned in the holy Quran, “Those who (in charity) spend of their goods by night and by day, in secret and in public have their reward with their Rab (only God and Sustainer). On them shall be no fear nor shall they grieve.” (2:274) – In a different verse it is mentioned, “…that which you give for charity, seeking the Countenance of Allah, (will increase); it is those who will get a recompense multiplied.” (30:39)
Prophet PBUH said, "Every good deed is charity." [Bukhari]
Prophet PBUH said, "If a Muslim plants a tree, or sows a field and men and beasts and birds eat from it, all of it is charity from him." [Muslim]
Prophet PBUH said, "While a man was walking, he saw a thorny branch on the road, so he removed it and Allah appreciated his action and forgave him." [Bukhari]
Prophet PBUH said, " Every day the sun rises charity (Sadaqah) is due on every joint of a person (as a sign of gratitude to Allaah). To judge justly between two persons is regarded as a charity. To help a man concerning his riding animal by helping him to ride it or by lifting his luggage on to it is regarded as a charity; saying a good word is a charity. Every step taken on one's way to offer the obligatory prayer (in the mosque) is also a charity. To remove a harmful thing from the way is also a charity." [Bukhari & Muslim]
Prophet PBUH said, "Iman has over seventy branches, the uppermost of which is the declaration: `None has the right to be worshipped but Allah'; and the least of which is the removal of harmful object from the road, and modesty is a branch of Iman.'' [Bukhari]
Prophet PBUH said, "I saw a man going about in Paradise (and enjoying himself) as a reward for cutting from the middle of the road a tree which was causing inconvenience to the Muslims." [Muslim]
Prophet PBUH said, "Do not belittle any good deed, even meeting your Muslim brother with a cheerful face." [Muslim]
Prophet PBUH said, "While a man was walking on his way he became extremely thirsty. He found a well, he went down into it to drink water. Upon leaving it, he saw a dog which was panting out of thirst. His tongue was lolling out and he was eating moist earth from extreme thirst. The man thought to himself: `This dog is extremely thirsty as I was.' So he descended into the well, filled up his leather sock with water, and holding it in his teeth, climbed up and quenched the thirst of the dog. Allah appreciated his action and forgave his sins". The Prophet companions asked: "Shall we be rewarded for showing kindness to the animals also?'' He PBUH said, "A reward is given in connection with every living creature." [Bukhari & Muslim]

Above Hadiths highlight the importance of doing good deeds and sympathy with others for the sake of obtaining Allah’s pleasure. May we spend our lives, time, money and efforts to do deeds that Allah accepts as forms of sadaqah solely for His Sake. May Allah bless us with opportunities to do many ways of giving sadaqah and reward us with best in this life and the Hereafter. Ameen.
