Islamic Model of Anger Management
Islamic Model of Anger Management
Hafiz Aziz
Anger is the feeling one has towards something or someone. According to the Islamic definition, it is a destructive fire and is a temptation and deception of Shaitan. Anger is like fire which destroys our well-being, consumes our good actions, repels our dear ones and forces the angels to report bad actions for the Heavenly records. Following are some of the cures mentioned in Sunnah:
To seek refuge from Shaitan: Say "Audhu billahi minashaytan ni rajim". This cure was given by the Prophet BPUH when a man showed anger in a situation where he was in front of the Prophet PBUH. He PBUH said "I know something that if he says it, his anger will go away and that is to say: "Audhu billahi minashaytan ni rajeem." [Bukhari]. Since anger comes from Shaitan, then we should seek refuge with Allah from him. Allah says, “If an evil suggestion comes to you from Shaitan, then seek refuge in Allah. Verily, He is Hearing and Knowing” [7:200].
If you are standing, then you should sit; If the anger fails to subside, then you should lie down: Prophet PBUH said, “Verily, anger is a burning ember in the heart of the son of Adam, as you see it in the redness of his eyes and the bulging of his veins. Whoever feels anything like that should lie down on the ground” [Tirmidhi].
A person should remain silent: Prophet PBUH here refers to the mental state of the person. When a person is angry, Shaitan may tempt them to say things that he\she may not mean and thus escalate the situation and makes matters worse. In anger, people may say things that destroy relationships. That is why it is best to refrain from speaking when in anger and to wait until the anger subsides and speak in a calm manner so that a person does not regret afterwards.
Make wudhu” or “make Ghusl”:
Story of Hezrat Ali KW about not acting on anger: Ali KW was fighting in a battle imposed on Muslims and the chief of the Unbelievers confronted him. During the fight the Unbeliever fell down on the ground and Ali KW was about to kill him. This person, knowing his fate, so he spit on the face of Ali. Ali KW immediately got up and left him alone. The man was amazed and came running to Ali KW and asked, "You should have become even more angry due to my spitting at you and should have hastened in killing me. Why did you spare me?" Ali KW replied, "Due to this action of yours my Nafs became involved and my intention did not remain purely for the sake of Allah". This unbeliever became Muslim immediately.
Please sit down for a moment
One should never act spontaneously in accordance with the dictates of anger. Along with the quality of anger, Allah SWT has endowed us with the ability to control such anger to ensure that it is not misdirected and unjustly employed. May Allah forgive all our sins and help us control our anger - Ameen.
