Manners of Dialog and Speech
Manners of Dialog and Speech
Hafiz Aziz
Our words can either, if they are pleasing to Allah, may raise us to higher levels in Paradise; or if they displease Allah may cause us to be thrown into the Hellfire. Avoid being arrogant when speaking, refrain from backbiting, lying, bad language or cursing. We should speak only if our speech is beneficial to others, be truthful when we speak and speak about matters within our knowledge and expertise, and void involvement in senseless arguments in which the purpose is to put down others and to show superiority. As a listener, we shouldinterpret things in a positive manner. If we find ourselves in the middle of a dispute, Islam teaches us to try to reconcile the differences and resolve the problems. If we do not have enough knowledge and we cannot provide proper advice, then we should simply keep silent.
It is mentioned in the holy Quran, “Not a word does he utter, but there is a watcher by him ready (to record it) .” [18:18]
It is mentioned in the holy Quran, “And do not follow (say) that of which you have no knowledge.” [17:36]
It is mentioned in the holy Quran, “And speak nicely to people.” [2:83]
Prophet PBUH said, "Let whosoever believes in Allah and in the Last Day to either speak good or be silent." [Bukhari & Muslim]
Prophet PBUH said, “A good word is also a charitable deed.” [Muslim]
Prophet PBUH said, “Talk to people with speech that they can understand. Do you wish that people belie Allah and His messenger?” [Bukhari & Muslim]
Prophet PBUH said, “Men accustomed to cursing will not be intercessors or witnesses on the Day of Resurrection.” [Muslim]
Prophet PBUH said, “Let those older than you speak first.”[Bukhari & Muslim]
Prophet PBUH said, “A man may utter a word pleasing to Allah without considering it of any significance, but for which Allah elevates his ranks (in Paradise); another one may speak a word displeasing to Allah without considering it of any importance, but for which he would be plummeted into Hell.” [Bukhari]
It is narrated that: “Prophet PBUH never used foul speech, nor did he like to listen to it. If a bad word was used in his presence, He PBUH would turn his face away to reflect his objection to it. Whenever He saw something he disliked, we could perceive it on his face.” [Bukhari & Muslim]
Please sit down for a moment
We should remember that there are angels recording every word we say. We should speak in a polite manner, avoiding words that hurt or humiliate others. When in a conversation, a Muslim is required to be humble and distinct in his\her speech, character, creed and manners. May Allah help us guard our tongues and speak in the manner our Prophet PBUH thought us –Ameen.
